September 14, 2009

We are off and running! Today was a travel day, with our main goal being to rack up 378 miles. Our destination; Newcomerstown, Ohio. Much of the day was spent on I77 which turned out to be an unusual day in that traffic was almost nonexistent. We encountered very few trucks, and very light traffic in the Charleston, WV area. We did stop in Beckley, WV for a walk through the local antique mall. Last year we included in our blog a few pictures of the Stern-wheeler Festival in Marietta, OH that were taken from the WV side of the Ohio River.(see our 2008 blog). This year we stopped in Marietta and took a few pictures of the town and the Ohio River looking north. The first picture is of the Marietta Court House. Notice the brick streets and the streetcar tracks. Much of the town looks like you stepped back in time 75 years.

The second picture is of a wall that shows a glass press used to make "pressed glass". This area of Ohio and West Virginia are famous for their glass factories, with the most famous being Fenton Glass in Williamstown, WV. Fenton is just across the Ohio River from Marietta.

Our third picture is of the Ohio River looking north from the junction of the Ohio and the Muskingum River. The bridge in the foreground is the old bridge connecting Marietta, OH and Williamstown, WV. The bridge in the background is I77. Food was a high priority and we stopped for lunch at an Italian Restaurant that we found two years ago. Tonight we are staying in Newcomerstown, OH. The desk clerk recommended a small family restaurant for dinner. The food was very good but the real treat was the coconut cream pie. All the deserts are made in house and the list is extensive. Next time we will start with desert and not worry with a main course!

The last picture is our "sign of the day". This is our first day out and we had to really look to find something. This picture is reminiscent of Roanoke in 1985. The building where this mark is shown is three blocks from the Ohio River. The mark itself is three feet from the ground...the river was running way out of its banks!!
Tomorrow we will head north with a destination of Birch Run, MI. Our stops will include Carousel Magic where carousel horses come to life from a block of wood. We will also stop at the Carousel Park for a ride or two on a vintage carousel. See you again tomorrow. T&C
